The good, the ugly, and the funny

Here it is, one week out from surgery.  Where has the time gone, it has been so fun.  Well, hopefully more fun for the wonderful people taking care of our child, our chickens, our dog, our cat, and all the other stuff people were graciously willing to take on.  This may end up being stream of consciousness. We'll see.

I got three whole hours of sleep "off the pole" last night.  I know what you are imagining, but you would be so far from reality... Anyway...  They pulled my doppler line, I only need an IV when they are giving me antibiotics, and we are moving from "continuous feed" to "bolus" feed.  Walking without dragging a pole along!  Whoo hoo!

Overall lots of sleep last night, although I had two laps in before six this am.  Sleep makes everything better. I'm blowing an IV about every two uses, so I think I've met all the IV specialists now. I've seen just about everyone from respiratory, either to refill my oxygen/humidifier or to suction out my trach.  Yes, just as fun as it sounds.  I was down to three drains, trach, and feeding tube.  And then... this morning I got up, looked in the scary mirror to try to convince myself it is a fun house reflection, and see red and swelling that feels hot. Never a good thing.  I call nurse, nurse calls doctor, doctor calls another doctor...on down the line. Verdict? They don't know but it should be "opened up." Goody.  But, since I've be "eating" they can't right now. Sigh. Can't ever just make this easy.  They will watch it and if no improvement, pull me off "food" tonight and open it up in the am.  So very fun.

On the upside, the flap looks good and they, of course, poked it with a needle to prove it.  Glad it has no feeling.  Oh, and just for grins, they cut off one of the neck drains, just leaving an inch or so protruding to drip gross stuff on my shoulder.  Lovely.

Tons of young people around for training.  I'm a pretty good side show, so I've had a lot of business.  My friend Tamara came by and visited (for real, not just to gape and stare), brought a sweet card and flowers and chatted me up three laps around.  Yay Tamara!

If I could find a chair/bed/seat that worked and supported my head I'd be thrilled.

If  doctor says they are going to be "aggressive" in getting your digestive system back functioning, be prepared.

If your pulse oximeter slipped off your finger into the, umm, toilet, it cannot be rescued.

Tired of drooling, tired of swelling and tired of discomfort.  Glad to have another crack at life:)

Love,
Kiara

Kiara,
So glad you have another crack at life too! And, if I knew you were taking visitors. we would have been there by now! Hope you come home on Friday, and hope you'll put us to work in any, way, shape, or form this weekend. If you don't allow Stuart and I to show up and start doing stuff or keep you company, we'll just have to show up and do it with or without your permission. :-)
I hope the redness/swelling is an easy fix. We want you to come home, not extend your stay!
Miss you, can't wait to see you and give you a hug (Kelly too), and we send our love.

You are simply amazing, Kiara! I have been reading your posts daily (sometimes checking in more than one reading a day just to know what's happening in your world) and feel that you are an inspiration. I mean, when I knew you before, I thought you were pretty incredible, with all the passion you brought to improving schools and advocating for kids, but now I'm blown away by your perseverance, positive energy, and ability to laugh in difficult times. I echo others' comments in that I hope they spring you soon and that you have lists of things for those of us who are in Eugene to do to help out. Hugs, Anne B.
