Never a dull moment.

Good morning, all.  Kelly here.

The doctors came around last night to confirm the swelling was still there.  It was.  They put Kiara on the surgery schedule for this afternoon to reopen the incision, clean out whatever's in there, and check for any leaks.

Kiara texted me at 6:15am that they were getting ready to transport her to Pre-Op and that the procedure was being done first thing this morning.  If any members of the Oregon law enforcement community are reading this, I will neither confirm nor deny that I broke several traffic laws getting to the hospital.

She was under for about an hour.  Essentially, they found a bunch of pus in around one portion of the incision.  Kiara has been on antibiotics, but her body formed scar around the pus so the meds couldn't get to it.  This "capsule of pus" (great name for a rock band) is what they drained.  Yes, Dr. Peck actually compared it to popping a zit.  Yummy.  I hope you're not reading this over breakfast.  They sent the pus to the lab to culture it and see what grows.  Obscure movie reference: If Wilford Brimley pops up out of the petri dish, everyone needs to run.

There are no leaks or problems with the flap.  It's holding fine and doing what it's supposed to.  They added some extra drains to the left side of Kiara's neck to keep everything moving.

Of course, all of this extra drama is extending our stay in Portland.  We're now looking at a Monday discharge.  In anticipation of this, last night we mobilized another weekend battalion for Karissa.  Many thanks to Jen, Angie, Karina, Lori, Heather, and anyone I may have missed.

Kiara is on her way back to the room, and I'm sure she'll have something to say later today.  Love to all.

You are so right, my Dear Kelly, never a dull moment. But it's just a little "speed bump" on Kiara's road to a complete recovery.

Whenever I feel like "kvetching" about the pain in my arms, I think of Kiara and what she has just gone
through with amazing courage and great attitude and I feel like such a wuss!!!

I can certainly learn some lessons from my daughter-in-law. Although I prefer to leave out the "in-law" part.

Love & hugs to you both.

Please update later today.
