I'm dreaming of ice water

So having your tongue burned is not so nice. I can eat salt soups and foods that have the same salinity as salt water. However, drinking salt water does not quench your thirst, as anyone who has ever watched a stranded on the ocean movie will tell you. It was so bad last night that I began to fantasize about ice water.

I can get fluids down, if I can get them past the burns. A straw with your finger over the end or a dosing syringe works, but that really takes a long time to get anything significant that way. It does work with a slushee, though, which feels soooooooo goooooood. Unfortunately I would have to just sit around squirting liquids in my throat all day. Not too realistic.

Fortunately for the girls, our friends have all really taken them under their wings. Angie and Jen have taken them here and there and had them over. Today, the Steinmetz family visiting from Reno have them at Putters and then swimming at the hotel pool. Much more fun than watching mom squirt water in her throat with syringe.

In desperation, I called the dietitian at the cancer center this morning. Of course she is concerned about how many calories and how much protein. I just want some water. After some consultation she called back and had me come in. She would like the feeding tube, but it wouldn't be in until next week and it has to stay in at least 6 weeks. Dr. Gemmell feels no. More pain meds maybe. I just thing the broad spectrum narcotic is over kill when all the pain is localized to my mouth. I did get a luscious bag of IV fluids today. One hour and 10 minutes of glucose and saline run into a vein in my hand. UUUMMMM.... I even have the black and orange smiley face tape around my hand to prove it.

Is it wrong to lust after IV fluids???

I am still shedding my skin like a snake. The kenalog does help, but not noticeably more than any other lotion. My neck looks pretty bad. Of course, my mouth looks much worse, but passersby don't have to look at my tongue. Thank goodness for that.

Being filled up on fluids is making me tired. I guess I should go rest a little. I still have things I want to do today, and my time with the syringe.

Love,
Kiara

Hey Kiara - Have you thought about trying Otter Pops? They're kinda like slushees only way cheaper and come in their own delivery package instead of a straw? Just your description of your straw obsession made me think about it. Our 2-year-old loves them and they're cents on the Pop. Hang in there, and I'm glad the IV helped for today. Love, Kate
