Good evening, all.
The rest of the day passed with no surprises. Kiara has remained under sedation, although she was awake a few times to respond to requests from nurses and doctors. The surgical team replaced some of the packed gauze around her breathing tube, and the respiratory techs came and changed out some of the ventilator tubing that had filled with blood.
The plan for tomorrow is where things get scary.
The team needs to change Kiara's breathing tube for a standard trach tube. The breathing tube currently in place is typically used only during surgery. It's not meant to be a long-term solution. There is, however, a big risk to doing the procedure. It's possible that the pulling out and putting in of tubes may dislodge or otherwise disrupt the stent that's now in place. If that happens, the hole in the artery will open again and the bleeding may be unstoppable.
Yes, this is the worst-case-scenario. But, the risk is there and is heightened by the unusual/altered anatomy in Kiara's neck.
I'm not sure when they plan on doing the procedure, but I will be at the hospital first thing in the morning. If I can, I'll post a blog entry before anything gets started.
Kiara feels your strength, your energy, and your love. Please keep it coming.
