Just met with Dr. Andersen.
As mentioned, his portion of the operation is complete. He had to remove Kiara's entire tongue in order to grab the whole tumor. He got to a small portion in the back/right that might have been salvageable. But, he couldn't really tell if it was tumorous or just scarred from previous surgery. At that point, he made the decision to remove it. It was too small to be much help to Kiara, but if he left any tumor behind what the hell's the point. I'm fine with that perspective.
Some good news: once the anesthesia kicked in and Kiara's jaw/neck muscles relaxed, he was able to do the entire procedure inside her mouth. They didn't have to split her jaw, remove teeth, etc. That should facilitate easier healing. Kiara will be a little disappointed that her Halloween costume won't be as intense (looks like Nearly Headless Nick, sounds like Stephen Hawking) but I think she'll get over it.
Next update should be in an hour or so. I'm going to take a walk and grab some fine hospital lunch. Speak with you all soon.

Great news about the no-jaw-splitting! Thanks for updating us Kelly.
Happy to hear about the jaw. Even in her sleep she's amazing.
Knowing what the additional risks were, this is a multifaceted blessing. Kiara is truly amazing (and, just perhaps the power of prayer at work too). Keep praying everyone!
So happy to hear they got it all and didn't have to break her even more. I am sitting by the computer all day watching your updates. Kelly know that we love you too and we are thinking about what you are going through also.
Prayers and good vibes coming your way too Kelly to keep you strong.
Great news brother. Love to all.
Aaron G.
Sending wishes for good healing. THanks for posting on the blog. We're all thinking of you.
